Highlights
- Gustav Klimt: The Kiss
- Baroque palace and gardens
- The iconic vista of Vienna, known as the “Canaletto View”
Prinz Eugene, known as “the noble knight,” was more than the heroic conqueror of the Ottomans. He was an aesthete, who saw himself as both Hercules, the invincible, and Apollo, leader of the Muses. In commissioning architect Lukas von Hildebrandt to design a splendid summer palace and accompanying grounds, Prinz Eugene established a monument to himself – a symbiosis of baroque stone masonry and elaborate gardens, all with an iconic view of central Vienna.
Decades later, the palace became home to the Austrian Gallery of Art. Among the most famous works in the collection are Gustav Klimt’s painting, “The Kiss,” and significant works by Egon Schiele.
