The Imperial Treasury

Crowns, Jewels and other precious things

Highlights

  • The crown and regalia of the Holy Roman Empire
  • Order of the Golden Fleece
  • Miraculous powers: Unicorn horn, Holy Grail

You will be wide-eyed with wonder when you see the glittering treasures in the showcases of the Imperial Treasury, the Schatzkammer. Each of the priceless items on display is a work of art, but more than that, these items represent power and are laden with imperial and religious symbolism.

The crown of the Holy Roman Empire belongs to the most important imperial regalia of the Middle Ages. The Order of the Golden Fleece, the Holy Grail, the horn of a unicorn or the holy lance all are the stuff of legend, and in some cases were believed to have supernatural powers. To visit the secular and ecclesiastical treasuries in the Hofburg palace is to journey through thousands of years of European history.
